BHESA Ekushey Heritage Award 2017

In a unanimous decision the executive committee of BHESA approved the recommendation to honor three people and an organization of the community with the Ekushey Heritage Award. The awards will be distributed to the recipients through an official ceremony on International Mother Language Day.

Awarded for Community Service is Dr. Syed Amir Ali, who is a social activist since 1979 and was a pioneer of founding the community organization Bangladesh Canada Association of Edmonton (BCAE). He is known for his achievements as a community organizer along with his friends and colleagues.

Awarded for Voluntary Activities and Community Service is Hazara Akter, who is managing a daycare centre and has been contributing services at the Heritage Festival in Edmonton as a volunteer of reputation.

The student Moh. Ashif is awarded for his contributions to the Mahinur Jahid Memorial Foundation (MJMF), where he supports the Bangladeshi and Canadian youth through voluntary sports activities.

The Mahinur Jahid Memorial Foundation (MJMF) is also awarded for the Ekushey Heritage Award as an organization that provids a forum for the Bangladeshi and Canadian youth to promote getting active in sports activities.

Ekushey will be celebrated by BHESA on the 22nd of February through erection of a symbolic Language Martyr's Monument at the premises of the Grant MacEwan University (Downtown Campus Location), where members of the community will be able to lay down flowers. BHESA is also organizing a WALK & TALK in mother tongue event (2:00 PM - 3:00 PM), and later in the evening a cultural program on International Mother Language Day.

The Bangladesh PressClub Centre of Alberta, the Bangladesh Heritage Museum, and the Mahinur Jahid Memorial Foundation will celebrate the day on 21st February at the Abbortsfield Public Library in Edmonton, also organizing a Boi Mela. The program will be held from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM.

    Edmonton, April 17, 2017 (BHESA) - Bangladesh Community in Edmonton celebrates Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year-1424, with great enthusiasm and festivity. Bangladesh Heritage and Ethnic Society of Alberta in Canada celebrates its Heritage Festival (Bengali New Year) in a colorful manner along with other organizations.

  • MJMF Soccer on Remembrance and Independence Day of Bangladesh Monday, March 20, 2017

    On Tuesday, March 21, 2017 the Mahinur Jahid Memorial Foundation (MJMF Bangladesh Sports Club) organized a colorful Soccer Tournament on March 21st marking the Genocide Remembrance and Independence Day of Bangladesh at the Edmonton Killarney School premises. At the event 3 local soccer teams, the MJMF Bangladesh Sports Club, Bangladesh PressClub of Alberta (BPCA) and Bangladesh Heritage Museum met to determine a winner in the tournament. BPCA and MJMF jointly won the championship by 2-2 goals in the final play.

  • Nominations for the Ekushey Heritage Award 2017 Saturday, January 14, 2017

    The Bangladesh Heritage and Ethnic Society of Alberta (BHESA) has decided on the nominees for the Ekushey Heritage Award 2017 in its executive meeting on January 14, 2017 chaired by Mashod Bhuiyan. Honored will be three people and one organization of the community, Dr. Ali, Hazara Akter, Ashif and the Mahinur Jahid Memorial Foundation (MJMF-Bangladesh Sports Club) represented by its president Ahsan Ullah.
