Ekushey and International Mother Language Day

Ekushey February and International Mother Language Day were celebrated with due respect in the city of Edmonton, Canada. Bangladesh Heritage and Ethnic Society of Alberta organised the event at an auditorium in the city on a Saturday evening.

Freedom fighter Delwar Jahid was present as the chief guest at the function presided over by Sultan Russel, president of the organization. He said that International Mother Language Day today is a global symbol of linguistic diversity and cultural pluralism. More efforts are needed at the international level to establish the spirit of Ekushey on an institutionally sound foundation.

Vice-President Mohammad Jamal Uddin said that in 1999, UNESCO recognized the International Mother Language Day. However, it is necessary to carry out continuous cultural practices to convey the significance of this day to the new generation.

Prayers were offered in memory of the language martyrs. After the Iftar and prayers, the cultural phase began. Songs, poems and recitations of children and teenagers created an emotional atmosphere.
