Ekushey Heritage Award
Award Recipients 2014
In 2014 BHESA nominated six dedicated volunteers for the Ekushey Heritage Award 2014 in recognition of their contributions to their fields or significant organizational endeavors. The medal of honors were awarded on February 21, 2014 during a ceremony held at the MacEwan University.
The recipients of the Award in 2014 are:

· Mr. Shahid Hassan (Founder of BHESA)
· Mr. Mohammad Ismail (Former Vice-President of BHESA)
About the Recipients
Mr. Rajshahi Mohammad Siddique Hossain
Awarded for his achievements as Language Movement Participant. Rajshahi Mohammad Siddique Hossain He joined the Language Movement of 1952 in former East Pakistan advocating the recognition of the Bengali language as an official language of Pakistan. The movement reached its climax when police killed a number of student demonstrators. That day he was a hero that survived. |

He also was a school teacher in Bangladesh and is former president of the Bangladesh Cultural Association of Edmonton (BCAE). Siddique Hossain is well respected in the community for his contribution to the society for now over 4 decades of voluntary work.
Awarded for Education and Community Service. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Nurul Islam is an educationalist who is serving the MacEwan University since July 1998. Prior that he has taught in many other universities, e.g. at Dhaka University, National University of Singapore, Dalhousie University, Memorial University, and University of British Columbia. the Bangladesh Cultural Association of Edmonton (BCAE) and is the founder of the Edmonton Bangla School. Further he was member of the Board of Trustees at the Edmonton Islam Academy from January 2008 to November 2010. He continues contributing to our community with dedication and sincerety.
Awarded for Research and Community Service. Dr. M. Hafizur Rahman has enjoyed first class education with a B.Sc. (Hons) and a M.Sc. at the Botany University of Dhaka. He was teaching as a lecturer and assistant professor at the University of Dhaka from 1982 to 1987. Here in Canada he obtained the Ph.D. at the University of Calgary, and filled the position as post-doctoral |

fellow, and then as research associate at the University of Alberta since 1994. To date he has more than 50 research publications published in international journals and book chapters. As a member of the Azad Boys Club in Dhaka's Premier League he won many league and tournament championships and runners-up trophies during the time from 1974 to 1978. He also is former president of the Bangladesh Cultural Association of Edmonton (BCAE), and is serving the community for more than 18 years with devotion to social work.
Awarded for Community Service. Tajul Ali is former President of BHESA (2013), former Vice President of BHESA (2012), and former chair of the Bangladesh Cultural Association of Edmonton (BCAE), now BHESA. He also held positions as Ad-hoc Committee and former chair of the Bangladesh Pavilion at the Edmonton Heritage Festival (2013), and he has been serving the |

community with highest commitment for over 17 years.
Awarded for Organization and Community Service. Shahid Hassan is founder and former President of the Bangladesh Cultural Association of Edmonton (BCAE), that later renamed to Bangladesh Heritage and Ethnic Society of Alberta (BHESA). He was President for 3 terms from 2010 to 2012, and is former chair of the Bangladesh Pavilion at the Edmonton Heritage Festival in |

2011. He also was Director of the Alberta Progressive Convervative Party (PC) in Edmonton Ellarslie (2010-2013), and has been serving our community for nearly 10 years with a strong ability to organize, and with much enthusiasm to volunteerism.
Awarded for Community Service. Mohammad Ismail served under the Bangladesh Navy (Engineering Branch) from 1976 to 1981. Today he is an automotive journeyman with interprovincial certification, and he is serving under the Airport Terminal Services of Edmonton. and has been serving the community with utmost devotion for now over 25 years.
